INDIANAPOLIS — State Affairs has tapped Kaitlin Lange and Ryan Martin as senior investigative reporters for State Affairs Indiana, which investigates the policy, politics and people that impact your life. 

The Indiana site, which launches today, will  provide commentary, enterprise and investigative reporting that hold state governments accountable. State Affairs Indiana will also provide a weekly newsletter with the facts you need to know about what’s happening in your state government and much more.

The investigative team works in tandem with State Affairs Pro, led by Managing Editor Brian Howey, veteran journalist and founder of Howey Politics Indiana. 

Kaitlin Lange has covered six legislative sessions at the Indiana Statehouse. Before joining State Affairs as a senior investigative reporter, she was the sole Statehouse reporter at The Indianapolis Star, writing about state and federal politics and policy for all of Gannett’s Indiana papers. Her previous reporting experience includes a stint covering Westfield and Carmel government for The Indianapolis Star, as well as state government for the Evansville Courier & Press. Lange is a Ball State University graduate with degrees in political science and journalism. She  lives in Noblesville with her husband, cat and dog. 

Ryan Martin is a senior investigative reporter for State Affairs Indiana. He joined the company after working as an investigative reporter at The Indianapolis Star. He was part of a team of journalists from four newsrooms who won the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for an investigation that examined K-9 units and the damage inflicted by police dogs.

He also co-authored a series that exposed a death crisis inside Indiana’s county jails. The articles were recognized with an award by Investigative Reporters and Editors, and the Indiana chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists has twice honored Martin’s journalism as “Story of the Year.”

Prior to the IndyStar, Martin worked as managing editor for The Elkhart Truth. He holds a master’s degree from Washington University in St. Louis; a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri; and an associate’s degree from John A. Logan College in southern Illinois, where Martin grew up.

He now lives on Indianapolis’ east side. In his spare time he plays board games with his wife and explores Indiana’s forests with his dogs.
