Farmers help us put food on our tables but few people realize farming is not only physically exhausting but mentally grueling. The state of Georgia as well as mental health organizations offer an assortment of resources geared toward farmers, their families and those who work in agriculture.
If you or someone you know is dealing with mental health challenges, here are some resources to consider:
988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Launched in Georgia in July 2022, this round-the-clock help line connects callers to resources. It’s available in English and Spanish.
Agrisafe Network. resources in English and Spanish focusing on mental health geared towards farmers and minorities in the agriculture community.
Coping with Disaster bookmark. A guide you can carry with you anywhere.
Georgia Agricultural Wellness Alliance. A coalition of farmers, nonprofits, universities and health groups created to improve the well-being of farmers and farming communities.
Georgia Crisis & Access Line. A 24/7 toll-free helpline staffed with licensed mental health professionals. It is run by The Department of Behavioral and Developmental Disabilities. Call 1-800-715-4225.
Georgia Department of Agriculture. This website has numerous mental health resources.
Georgia Rural Health Innovation Center. This website offers a host of resources
GDA Disaster Resources and Recovery. – Offers mental health resources focusing on disaster recovery and animal disease outbreaks.
Mind Your Melon. A podcast on health and well-being by Florida farmer Marshall Sewell who lost his father to suicide.
Thriving on the Farm. UGA Prof Anna Scheyett’s blog offers ways to cope with stress.
Rural Georgia: Growing Stronger. A UGA extension resource and training tools, including a method called QPR, which stands for Question, Persuade, Refer. You can use this approach if you think someone you know is suicidal.
