Job Description:

The Communications Specialist is responsible for developing content for the KPERS website, publications, newsletters and other communication vehicles to promote the System’s objectives, accomplishments, and activities to a diverse audience, which includes both external and internal customers. Agency communications must be clear and concise to ensure that difficult and complex information is easily understood. All projects are completed according to established corporate identity guidelines. Work is completed independently and is reviewed by the supervisor based on end results achieved.

Develops web and multimedia content, writes, edits and designs various agency communications including newsletters, brochures, forms and other informational materials according to the established corporate identity guidelines. Incumbent must research and determine content for publications. This requires a technical and detailed understanding of benefits and agency operations to ensure that information is conveyed clearly and concisely to avoid confusion and legal liabilities. Publications are for use by internal staff and external audiences consisting of members, employers and other interested parties. Submits final publication to supervisor for approval.

Conducts research on assigned topics by obtaining information from reference material and interviews with internal staff and outside resources.

Prepares and maintains necessary files, records and reports relating to prepared communications materials.

Regularly reviews website for accuracy and timeliness. Provides content support for kpers.org, the member web portal and the employer web portal. Supports digital communications specialist for daily maintenance of kpers.org.

Develops, writes, edits and designs various communication pieces to support internal communications. Coordinates with agency departments for communication content. This includes print, email, intranet and other communication vehicles as appropriate.

Works on special projects as assigned by supervisor to assist with workflow. Examples of special projects include coordinating special events and providing communication support on special projects.

Performs other duties and special projects as assigned to meet the objectives of KPERS.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An undergraduate degree with an emphasis in communications, journalism or public relations from an accredited college or university is required. Experience may be substituted at the discretion of the agency.

Preferred Qualifications:

Five years of experience in composing complex technical reports, articles or manuscripts. Education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency. Significant experience in using the Adobe Creative Cloud applications, including InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro and Dreamweaver, as well as Microsoft Office Suite.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency using the Adobe Creative Cloud applications including InDesign, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro and Dreamweaver, as well as Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proficiency using GoToWebinar or other webinar hosting application.
  • Proficiency using Survey Monkey or other survey creation software/services.
  • Proficiency using TechSmith Camtasia or other video editing software.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to convey complex concepts in simple language.
  • Ability to maintain positive working relationships with a diverse group of people.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team.
  • Strong attention to detail.
