Job Description:

The position (K0145874): KS Dept of Health and Environmental Laboratories is seeking experienced chemist to perform organic analytical testing using GC, GCMS, for analysis of pesticides, volatiles, disinfecting by products in water and soil.  Located in Topeka. Specific method training will be provided.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Public Drinking Water and Environmental Monitoring –   Analyze samples from Public Water Systems to ensure they are meeting the Safe Drinking Water requirements.  These samples are analyzed for Volatile Organic Compounds, Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds and disinfectant by products.  In addition, raw water samples such as ground water or surface water and soil samples are analyzed for Volatile Organic Compounds to support the environmental monitoring programs of the State of Kansas.

Must be able to follow written SOP’s, Test Methods and EPA methods as defined.

Responsible for compliance data review and reporting as required by the State and US-EPA.

Qualifications: 

Education:

The minimum level of education and experience required to perform the job.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Natural Science field with a minimum of 25 hours in chemistry and two years of experience in chemistry.

Licensing & Certification: 

  • Valid Driver’s License – Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver’s license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Any additional skills, experiences, or qualifications that would be beneficial, but aren’t strictly necessary.

  • Word, Excel
  • Proofreading, editing, attention to detail
  • Operation Gas Chromatographs
  • Operation Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometers
  • At least four years’ experience in analytical chemistry with one year experience in environmental organic compound analysis on drinking water samples; especially skilled in the operation of Gas Chromatograph / Mass Spectrometers preferably in the analysis of volatile organic analytes.
  • Knowledgeable in the operation, maintenance, and minor repair of complex laboratory instruments.
