Job Description:

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has an Advanced/Senior Epidemiologist opening in Topeka. This position will provide scientific and epidemiological support to the Childhood Blood Lead Surveillance program. Compile, clean, store and analyze specific data sets related to blood lead on a regular basis. Work closely with program staff to ensure accuracy and completeness of data. Follow up with internal and external partners to correct and complete data.  Monitor the data quality and apply continuous quality improvement techniques to increase the quality and availability of blood lead data compiled in various formats. Complete necessary training to understand how to manipulate and format data in a way that is readily consumed. Develop protocols for data management.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Conduct epidemiologic investigation (e.g., identifies population of interest, creates case definition, identifies investigation timeframe, considers, and accounts for sources of bias and confounders). Collaborate with informaticians to collect, parse, prepare, and provision data to design and maintain databases and tools.  Work with internal partners to develop a consolidated and secure blood lead database system with documented procedures that meet programmatic needs.  Compile, format, and submit blood led data to external partners on a quarterly basis. Complete blood lead data requests as assigned. Perform analyses of data including descriptive, predictive modeling, and hot spot mapping.

Collaborate with other public health professionals to aid in epidemiologic investigations, studies, surveillance, and programs. Disseminate results from data analysis via written reports, fact sheets, news releases, articles, materials for the KDHE web site, abstracts for presentations and posters at public health and scientific meetings, manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications, and other media.

Minimum Qualifications:

Advanced Epidemiologist

–  Master of Public Health or other master’s degree in a public health related program.

–  4 years of epidemiology experience.

Senior Epidemiologist

–  Master of Public Health or other master’s degree in a public health related program.

–  5 years of epidemiology experience.

Education:

  • Master of Public Health or other master’s degree in a public health related program.

Licensing & Certification:

  • Valid Driver’s License – Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver’s license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.

Preferred Qualifications:

Any additional skills, experiences, or qualifications that would be beneficial, but aren’t strictly necessary.

  • Scientific report writing.
  • Creating fact sheets, data briefs, etc.
  • Plan and conduct epidemiological studies.
  • Knowledge of program evaluation methods and data analysis.
  • Presenting scientific information to diverse audiences.
  • Epidemiological data analysis using SAS or R.
  • Proofreading, editing, attention to detail.
  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
