Job Description

Chemist (K0230160) Kansas Department of Health and Environment is seeking a talented chemist to perform environmental testing including nutrients, anions, metals, and others. Primarily performs analysis within the Inorganic Chemistry Unit. Some of these analyses include ammonia, phosphate, TKN and other analyses using automated colorimetric flow chemistry analyzer. This will entail reagent and standard preparation, calibration, and instrument maintenance. Perform determinations using approved KHEL methodology in accordance with EPA methods using appropriate and approved quality control procedures. Additional analysis may be performed within the unit which would require method development. Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: Reviews analytical data for accuracy and transfers results of chemical analysis using the Laboratory LIMS computer system. Analyzes and evaluates quality control samples to be used to set “Out of Control” levels and summarize precision and accuracy data, and quality control samples such as duplicates, spikes, blanks, and audits to confirm the reliability of data. Responsible for accurate reporting of results to the LIMS. Interprets, suggests, and initiates correction of quality control problems. Maintains maximum analytical performance and instrument life through established maintenance procedures according to the appropriate preventive maintenance documents. To assure that work has been documented and analysis completed accurately and efficiently; the work will be reviewed by the supervisor or an approved reviewer.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High School, GED
  • Licensing & Certification: Valid Driver’s License – Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver’s license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a Natural Science field with a minimum of 25 hours chemistry and six months of experience in chemistry.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a Natural Science field with a minimum of 25 hours chemistry and six months of experience in chemistry.
  • Word, Excel, Analytical Instrument Control Software
  • Proofreading, editing, attention to detail
  • Experience in instrumental analysis; especially skilled in performing analysis of waters and waste using EPA procedures for nutrient parameters.
  • Experience using Auto titrator instrument and the operation of Flow Chemistry Analyzer.
