Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Are you passionate about working within a diverse population? Join our team as a Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS). The Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s (KDHE) Bureau for Disease Control & Prevention (BDCP) has several DIS positions vacant across the state. Disease Intervention Specialist have been the backbone of public health for decades. DIS in Kansas are public health professionals who use contact tracing and case investigation to prevent and control infectious diseases like Syphilis and HIV/AIDS. As a DIS, you should possess certain skills such as, problem-solving skills, negotiation skills, investigative skills, and the ability to communicate and perform within a diverse population. This position supports the values of public health in Kansas by protecting and improving the health and environment for all Kansans. DIS Specialize in:

  • Public health investigations,
  • Case management and analysis,
  • Provider and community engagement, and
  • Outbreak detection and response.

Pay Range:

  • Disease Intervention Specialist – $20.63-$21.66 per hour
  • Advance Disease Intervention Specialist – $22.73 per hour
  • Sr Disease Intervention Specialist – $26.30-$27.62 per hour
  • LPN/RN Disease Intervention Specialist – $30.53-$34.65 per hour

* Salary can vary depending upon education, experience, or qualifications.

Education:

Disease Intervention Specialist Position

  • High School /GED

Advance Disease Intervention Specialist Position

  • High School /GED

Senior Disease Intervention Specialist Position

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Social sciences, Biology, or other health-related field

LPN/RN Disease Intervention Specialist Position

  • Nursing degree (college or technical)

Licensing & Certification:

  • Valid Driver’s License – Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver’s license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.

LPN/RN Disease Intervention Specialist Position

  • License to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the State of Kansas at the time of hire. or Eligible to be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Kansas and one year of experience in registered nursing

Minimum Qualifications:

Disease Intervention Specialist Position

  • One or more years of relevant work experience demonstrating the application of Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities necessary for the position.
  • One year of experience in public health work related to disease prevention, health education, or investigation.
  • Two years of other work experience providing client-centered service requiring advanced interpersonal skills and the ability to facilitate co-operation both among individuals and groups.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Social sciences, Biology, or other health-related field may be substituted for the required experience.

Advance Disease Intervention Specialist Position

  • Disease Intervention Specialist qualifications.
  • At least a year of experience working independently at the DIS level combined with accredited certification or other formal recognition of advanced technical knowledge and expertise.

Senior Disease Intervention Specialist Position

  • Advance Disease Interventions Specialist qualifications
  • Senior DIS requires one or more years of specific work experience demonstrating the application of Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities necessary for the position.
  • One year of experience working independently at the ADV. DIS level.
  • Two or more years of experience working independently at the DIS level.

LPN/RN Disease Intervention Specialist Position

  • DIS-specific work experience must also include accredited certification or other formal recognition of advanced technical knowledge and expertise.

Preferred Qualifications:

Any additional skills, experiences, or qualifications that would be beneficial, but aren’t strictly necessary.

  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access
  • Proofreading, editing, attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of methods used to prevent and control the spread of communicable infections.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply the use of computers and mobile devices for the collection of data.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally an in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain favorable interpersonal relationships with diverse populations.
  • Ability to collect, describe and analyze information to effectively solve problems, identify missing data.
  • Ability to act effectively in response to uncertainty, new information, or changed circumstances.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to conduct epidemiological field investigations.
  • One or more years of relevant work experience demonstrating the application of Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities necessary for the position.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Social sciences, Biology, or other health-related field may be substituted for the required experience.
