Job Description
This position (K0230134) is in the Division of Environment, Bureau of Environmental Remediation, Remedial Section, State Cooperative Program, Site Restoration Unit in Topeka, Kansas. See: https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/778/State-Cooperative-Program
The State Cooperative Program addresses complex, high priority contaminated sites. The State Cooperative Program provides the legal means by which KDHE works cooperatively with industry, municipalities, private citizens, and other parties potentially responsible for environmental contamination that threatens public health and the environment.

Successful candidates will have strong technical knowledge of environmental assessment processes and remedial methods for a variety of contaminants. Candidates should also display excellent organization, time management, communication, critical thinking, and deductive reasoning skills. Candidates will be expected to manage multiple complex sites simultaneously.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
Manage soil and groundwater pollution investigations and cleanups; evaluates geologic and hydrogeologic investigative and monitoring data under the supervision of a licensed geologist; and, tracks general remedial progress to ensure projects are completed within timeframes established by State law and budgets (where applicable). Effectively interacts with project stakeholders and the public to facilitate timely investigations and cleanups. Communicate all aspects of project management through appropriate chain of command to provide information and/or briefings to management as requested. Represent the agency/bureau/section/program at public meetings, technical meetings, and/or workshops to present soil and groundwater technical data, documents, and findings to the public, regulatory community, or industry. (Project Management) Serve as a Project Manager for several cooperative agreements with Potentially Responsible Parties (PRPs) at several sites across the State, including those with impacts to soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, and vapor. Most of your projects will have recently or historically had actual impacts to receptors.

Conduct geologic reviews of field investigations, cleanup work plans, field sampling plans, safety plans and other associated documents as assigned by Unit Chief. Project-specific documents must be reviewed within thirty (30)-day to sixty (60)-day timeframes. Document reviews through written correspondence with parties conducting such technical investigations and remedial action projects. A senior project manager or unit supervisor will review all correspondence. Assist in preparing geological maps and cross sections or analyze field data. Compile geologic source documents and laboratory test results, drill logs, and other field studies. (Project Management)

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Earth Science, Geoscience, or other related field.

Licensing & Certification:
Valid Driver’s License – Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver’s license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Geology Trainee (Remedial Project Manager)
  • Bachelor’s degree in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience or other related field.
  • Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear.
  • Incumbent is required to work towards professional geology licensure ultimately maintaining a professional geology license while in this position.
  • Geology Associate (Remedial Project Manager)
  • Bachelor’s degree in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience or other related field.
  • Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear.
  • Incumbent is required to work towards professional geology licensure ultimately maintaining a professional geology license while in this position.
  • Valid Intern Geologist certificate recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions.
  • Professional Environmental Geologist (Remedial Project Manager)
  • Bachelor’s degree in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience or other related field.
  • Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear.
  • Incumbent is required to work towards professional geology licensure ultimately maintaining a professional geology license while in this position.
  • Valid Professional Geologist license recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions.
  • Professional Environmental Geologist Senior (Remedial Project Manager)
  • Bachelor’s degree in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience or other related field
  • Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear
  • Incumbent is required to work towards professional geology licensure ultimately maintaining a professional geology license while in this position
  • Valid Professional Geologist license recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions
  • 4 years’ experience as a Professional Geologist.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Geoscience, or related field.
  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access o Proofreading, editing, attention to detail
  • Competent with office computing (Microsoft Office 365, Adobe Acrobat, Google Earth, etc.) o Efficient time management skills o Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to use critical thinking and reasoning to develop solutions to complex problems
  • Ability to learn and use new web-based software or databases
  • Experience with GIS or other mapping products
  • Experience utilizing personal protective equipment
  • Experience in collection and interpretation of soil, sediment, groundwater, and air samples
  • Experience performing environmental contractor oversight
  • Experience preparing and reviewing environmental assessment and remediation reports
  • Experience evaluating environmental data
  • Graduate or post baccalaureate classes in geology or similar field o 1- 5 years experience in a field of environmental, geological, or natural sciences/resources
Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:
  • Must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary personal protective equipment. Job does require physical activities involved with the essential functions of the job.
