Job Description:

The Department of Environment/ Bureau of Environmental Remediation, Storage Tank Section is hiring a Geology Series employee (K0230933).  This position is in the KDHE-BER Geology track. Geology Trainees that take and pass the Fundamentals of Geology Exam and have obtained a Meets Expectations or better on their most recent Performance Review, are eligible for a promotion to Geology Associate, as well as an associated pay increase.

Serve as an expert in the field of remedial system operation and oversight at complex multiple-source area sites in the Storage Tank Section.  Oversees the operation and maintenance of Public Water Supply treatment systems and remediation of contamination at sites that have affected public drinking water.  Reviews and evaluates geologic and hydrogeologic settings at Storage Tank sites throughout the state and applies analysis to developing optimal operation of remedial systems.  Reviews system operating parameters for optimization for complex projects in the Remedial Unit.  Includes analysis and interpretation of complex geologic and other technical data to identify and develop solutions to project specific environmental problems in the state.  Professional Geologists in this position provide expert analysis of remedial system operation and advises other project managers in the Remedial Unit.  Evaluates investigative, monitoring, and general remedial progress to ensure projects are completed within a time frame deemed adequate by KDHE and within time frames established by state law.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Reviews or designs geology, soil and/or ground water quality sampling programs to assure that verification sampling requirements relative to the Remedial Unit are effectively performed in accordance with the approved quality management plan including project specific field sampling plan, quality assurance project plan, work plan and associated guidance and policies.  Periodically involved with sampling, supervision of sampling, and actual field investigations of special projects as assigned.  Fieldwork may include traveling across the state including overnight stays for up to several days at a time.
  • Reviews project specific documents within program guidelines including thirty (30)-day to sixty (60)-day maximum review timeframes.  Reviews are documented through written correspondence with parties conducting such geologic or technical investigations and remediation.  Coordinates project management with other applicable bureaus and programs within the agency and other governmental or regulatory entities.  Communicates all aspects of project specific management orally with the Unit Manager/Program Coordinator.  Communication with the Section Chief and Bureau Director may also be required as designated.  Considerable communication is required between employee and vendors, municipal employees, KDHE BOW and BEFS staff, and the public regarding installation and operation of drinking water treatment systems.  Interacts with consultants and the public to review, present and negotiate all aspects of project management.  Responsible for numerous assignments during any week and coordinates these activities so that all necessary activities can be completed.  Performs numerous diverse duties to ensure that the environment of the state is preserved.  These activities will involve an extensive amount of verbal and written communication with the public, other state and federal agencies, and private industry.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Earth Science, Geoscience or other related field.

Licensing & Certification:

  • Valid Driver’s License – Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver’s license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.

Minimum Qualifications:

Geology Trainee

  • Bachelor’s degree in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience or other related field.
  • Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear.

Incumbent is required to work towards professional geology licensure ultimately maintaining a professional geology license while in this position.

Geology Specialist

  • Bachelor’s degree in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience or other related field.
  • Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear.

Incumbent is required to work towards professional geology licensure ultimately maintaining a professional geology license while in this position.

  • Valid Intern Geologist certificate recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions.

Professional Environmental Geologist

  • Bachelor’s degree in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience or another related field.
  • Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary protective gear.
  • Valid Professional Geologist license recognized by the Kansas Board of Technical Professions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Geoscience, or related field.
  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access
  • Proofreading, editing, attention to detail.
  • Organization, project management.
  • ArcGIS Pro/Mapping.
  • Environmental sampling and soil logging.
  • Data analysis and evaluation.

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:

  • Must pass a physical which certifies the individual can work in the necessary personal protective equipment. Job does require physical activities involved with the essential functions of the job.
