Job Description

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has a Health Physicist opening in Wichita. This position works primarily as an X-ray and Mammography inspector for the Kansas Radiation Control Program. Applicant must hold and maintain ARRT and Kansas LRT licenses. Duties include performing on-site inspections to determine if the use, possession, transfer, disposal, and storage of X-ray producing equipment are in accordance with Kansas laws and regulations; calculating radiation exposure to patients, employees and the public; creating written reports; preparing technical material pertaining to regulations and guidance documents; reviewing applications for X-ray machine registration including evaluating training and qualification of operators and shielding plans. Additional duties include participation in training and drills for radiological response and responding to actual incidents and emergencies involving radioactive materials.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Perform on-site inspections of small and large, complex x-ray registrants to determine if the use, possession, transfer, disposal, and storage of x-ray producing equipment are in accordance with K.S.A. 48-1601 et. seq.  Complete testing of x-ray equipment with a multi-parameter x-ray detection system to determine compliance. Gather information from each registrant through interview to determine compliance with regulations. Review qualifications of x-ray producing equipment users and calculate radiation exposure potential to employees and the public.  These duties include inspections in support of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Mammography Quality Services Act (MQSA) inspection contract.

The inspections must be followed by a written report and possible recommendation for enforcement action the first steps of which are carried out by the employee. Inspection reports are reviewed by the unit supervisor daily for completeness, and accurate citation of the regulations and statutes.

Prepare technical material relative to regulations, registration guides and information for registrants; Maintain calibration of radiation detection/measurement equipment annually; and special projects as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science with an emphasis in biology, chemistry, geology, or related natural science. An Associate of Science degree in any science field and four years of experience working in a radiation-related field may be substituted for the required education.

Licensing & Certification:

  • Valid Driver’s License – Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver’s license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.

Preferred Qualifications:

Any additional skills, experiences, or qualifications that would be beneficial, but aren’t strictly necessary.

  • Certification or eligible for certification by any of the following: MQSA State or FDA Inspector, American Board of Health Physics, National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists, American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), American Board of Radiology, or other societies or organizations dealing with radiation protection or health physics.
  • Completion of American Registry of Radiologic Technologist Credentialing. Licensed as a Radiologic Technologist by the State Board of Healing Arts in the state of Kansas.
  • Attendance at FDA Mammography and diagnostic X-ray inspector training courses. ARRT Certification Primary Radiology, Radiation Therapy, Nuclear Medicine. Post-primary Mammography, CT, CV, VI, QM. Experience in Health Physics and Radiological health measurements.
  • Proofreading, editing, attention to detail.
  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:

  • Within 12 months of hire, the incumbent in this position must successfully complete a respiratory protection qualification, including medical examination, respirator fit test, and is required to pass the written exam. Incumbent must maintain these qualifications on an annual basis.
  • MQSA Inspector Training must be completed within one year of completing Course I, II and III of FDA MQSA Inspector Training. Inspector must maintain qualification by completing at least the minimum number of inspections and the continuing education requirements.
