Internship Description

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is seeking an Interns to join our Internship Program in Kansas Health and Environmental Laboratories located in our Topeka, KS. office for the summer.

An intern opportunity to learn about and develop a template for risk assessments at KHEL that encompass biological, chemical, and occupational safety. Once a template has been created and approved, work with staff to create and update risk assessments for all testing performed at KHEL.

Over the course of the project, learning opportunities can include:

  • Observing process and procedures of a working laboratory
  • Participating in the KHEL Safety Committee
  • Developing templates and drafts policies relating to the lab safety
  • Providing training to KHEL staff relating to new policies/templates
  • RCRA Hazardous Waste experience and training
  • Proficiency in Document control software

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Driver’s License – Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver’s license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation to sites.
  • Due to the nature of the business, the incumbent must be a minimum of 18 years old at the time of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Any additional skills, experiences, or qualifications that would be beneficial, but aren’t strictly necessary.

  • Current college student, majoring in Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Occupational Safety, or related fields.

Post Offer Requirement

  • State of Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate. The successful applicant (even non-residents) must obtain a valid Kansas Certificate of Tax Clearance by accessing the Kansas Department of Revenue’s website within 10 days of the date the applicant has been offered the employment position. A Tax Clearance is a comprehensive tax account review to determine and ensure that an individual’s account is compliant with all primary Kansas Tax Laws. A Tax Clearance expires every 90 days. About the Position

  • Full/Part-time: Part-time. The position is allowed up to 480 hours per year max.
  • Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30am-5pm (Schedule can be flexible)
