Internship Project Duties:

The Kansas Department of Health Care Finance has five (5) Intern openings for our Junior Eligibility Trainee Position.  All interns will learn how to analyze the initial applications and reviews (for Long Term Care programs).  Students will also learn how to analyze the supporting documentation provided by applicants to determine eligibility for federal and state medical assistance.  All interns will gain experiences investigating the applicant circumstances using available computer systems (Databases, registries, and informational deposits).

An intern opportunity to learn about the KanCare program and processing applications.  Interns will investigate/ research records provided by the applicant regarding household income, resources, and expenses upon which the eligibility determination is made.  The Internship will be located at Forbes Field (6531 SE Forbes Ave Topeka, KS 66619).  Students must complete this eligibility training internship experience with a minimum of 344 clock hours regarding the eligibility process (Fall, Spring or Summer).

Each week, the student will meet with their assigned Senior Manager; and it is required that the student receive weekly meetings of individual supervision from the on-Site Supervisor/ Senior Manager.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:  Attending High School and enrolled in JAG-K, PRE-ETS programs.

Other Qualifications:

  • Valid Driver’s License – Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver’s license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.

–  Must hold and maintain a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation to sites.

Preferred Qualifications:

Any additional skills, experiences, or qualifications that would be beneficial, but aren’t strictly necessary.

  • While at the Internship site and in all interactions with, supervisors, peers, staff, and Senior Managers, the students are expected to exhibit professional attitudes and behaviors. This includes, but is not limited to:
  • Appropriate dress, hygiene, and grooming (business/business casual)
  • Professional written communication
  • Professional oral communication (this includes correct grammar and the avoidance of inappropriate language including informal language or slang)
  • Developing a self-awareness regarding attitudes, values, behavior patterns, and so forth that influence work.
  • Be receptive to feedback given by the Senior Manager (Trainers)
  • Utilizing a courteous, enthusiastic, open-minded, and critical approach to policies and procedures within the profession.
  • Track and submit any required documents, assignments and projects to KDHE/Bureau, University or to the High School, which includes providing updates on progress, as needed.
  • Follow instructions given by the assigned KDHE staff supervisor and other KDHE officials.
  • Follow all internet, computer and information technology policies, rules, and instructions required by KDHE.
  • Follow all agency and State of Kansas policies and rules as the student works with the KDHE, including, but not limited to prohibitions against discrimination and harassment.
  • As a condition of employment, will be subject to a criminal background check.

Post Offer Requirement:

State of Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate. The successful applicant (even non-residents) must obtain a valid Kansas Certificate of Tax Clearance by accessing the Kansas Department of Revenue’s website within 10 days of the date the applicant has been offered the employment position. A Tax Clearance is a comprehensive tax account review to determine and ensure that an individual’s account is compliant with all primary Kansas Tax Laws. A Tax Clearance expires every 90 days.
