Job Description:

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has a Medical Investigator opening in Topeka. The primary responsibility of a Blood Lead Regional Medical Investigator is to monitor the progress of blood lead case investigations conducted by local health departments within their assigned region on a daily and weekly basis. They help coordinate with local health department or other health care providers to ensure that timely follow-up testing is performed and monitor blood lead levels over time for cases. The role also provides technical assistance to local health department case investigators to ensure completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of appropriate data collection for surveillance and epidemiologic studies.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

Monitors progress of blood lead case investigations conducted by local health departments on a daily and weekly basis. Helps coordinate with local health department or other health care providers to ensure that timely follow-up testing is performed and monitors blood lead levels over time for cases. Provides technical assistance to local health department case investigators to ensure completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of appropriate data collection for surveillance and epidemiologic studies. Coordinates and monitors data in the electronic disease surveillance system.

Develops and maintains partnerships with other regional environmental health medical investigators and local health department investigators to establish and improve environmental health services delivered.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • High School, GED

Licensing & Certification:

  • Valid Driver’s License – Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver’s license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.

Preferred Qualifications:

Any additional skills, experiences, or qualifications that would be beneficial, but aren’t strictly necessary.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field or three years of experience in disease control or case.
  • Ability to converse comfortably with people about sensitive health information.
  • Experience with maintaining confidential information, preferably medical information.
  • Experience in disease control, epidemiology, nursing, medical investigation, clinical public health, and/or case management.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply the use of computers for the manipulation, analysis, and management of epidemiological data.
  • Ability to organize data/results for dissemination.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain favorable relationships with colleagues and outside partners.
  • Proofreading, editing, attention to detail.
  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.
