Strengthen and maintain government relations on behalf of GE’s North American Life & Health insurance business (NALH”) by engaging and advocating with state and national government and other political stakeholders. Develop policy positions with a deep understanding of NALH’s policy priorities and drive policy agenda that supports the business strategy.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Engage and advocate with state and national government – at all appropriate levels – to  ensure that NALH’s business point of view is considered.
  • Track key policies, laws, and regulations impacting insurance sector.
  • Participate in and influence policy debates and their outcomes.
  • Identify at an early stage, quantify and prioritize emerging related regulations and legislation that will affect NALH.
  • Ensure business awareness of the potential risks and benefits, and advocate for changes and amendments where appropriate.
  • Draft, circulate, and socialize draft bills and regulations amongst interested parties (both internal and external) for internal consensus and to determine impact.
  • Develop and identify supportive coalition partners related to issue advocacy and lobbying.
  • Interact with industry peers to promote policy goals. Coordinate strategic policy campaigns, particularly in long-term care related matters.
  • Represent NALH at various government and industry association meetings, where appropriate and assigned.
  • Participate in trade association meetings and drive trade activity on priority issues.
  • Serve on strategy, implementation and compliance project teams as needed to provide counsel and legal advice.
  • Must be willing to travel, domestically and internationally, as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college, JD preferred
  • A minimum of 7 years of government relations experience with strong preference for insurance industry experience
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job Any offer of employment is conditioned upon the successful completion of a background investigation and drug screen
  • Must be willing to travel as required

Desired Characteristics:

  • Proven well-established contact network, involvement and success in influencing the development of policy decisions
  • Strong knowledge of the state legislative and regulatory processes including understanding of the state insurance regulatory framework
  • Significant experience in advancing initiatives through strategic communications to policymakers
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the long-term care industry
  • The ability to analyze a broad range of issues quickly and thoroughly is key, as is strategic thinking to determine how best to influence decision/policy makers
  • A strong business acumen, strategic thinking ability, and degree of judgment
  • Exceptionally strong oral and written communication skills for effectively preparing and presenting information in both formal and informal settings, to external audiences and across all levels of the organization
  • Substantial collaborative skills with a track record of building strong relationships
  • A hands-on approach to problem solving, as well as a professional executive presence for interacting with and influencing public policy decision makers, senior management, and executives internal and external to the company is necessary
  • Strong cross functional collaboration and influencing skills across all levels of the organization
