Job Description:

The position (K0230156) Assess training needs of local clinical laboratories regarding isolation, presumptive identification, and transport of biological agents and other specimens. Assess the training needs of local environmental collection facilities regarding the collection, packing, and shipment of environmental samples. Arrange or provide training, as the needs assessment dictates, for all programs associated with KHEL. Establish and maintain relationships with infectious disease practitioners within the state to enhance laboratory surveillance for bioterrorism agents and facilitate culture referrals. Develop and train external and internal programs on packaging and shipping for biological and chemical agents. Utilize the training calendar and KS- TRAIN, on-line Web application, to post live and on-line training and conferences for laboratory preparedness and response training opportunities for both in-house Laboratory Response Team (LRT) members and external partners as previously identified.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:   Develop and implement all hazard coordination efforts between the Kansas Health and Environmental Laboratories and state clinical, hospital and microbiology laboratories which form the Sentinel Laboratory Response Network (LRN). Coordination addresses the roles, responsibilities, and resources required to provide an integrated state and local laboratory response for public health and/or health care emergencies or events. Assist with the development of Memorandum of Agreement/Understanding (MOA/MOU) with other laboratories intrastate and interstate to support the lab during a response as needed. Maintain contacts and share training resources with training coordinators from other states and preparedness program teams through work with the CDC, NLTN, and APHL.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • BS/BA in Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Science Education, or a related field.

Licensing & Certification:

  • Valid Driver’s License – Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver’s license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access
  • Proofreading, editing, attention to detail
  • Experience in a clinical laboratory
  • Phlebotomy skills
  • Interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience with adult learning training, training development and delivery
  • Strong public speaking abilities
  • At least one year of laboratory experience, especially in a hospital lab or an environmental lab.

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:

  • Within one month of hire date, must complete bloodborne pathogen and HIPAA training.
