Delegation Roundup (11.06.24)

Nov 06, 2024

— QUICK TAKE: Every member of the Louisiana delegation, save Congressman Garret Graves, who chose not to run again, has been re-elected. Replacing Graves in the new 6th District will be Congressman Cleo Fields, who got over the finish line with a 51 percent vote haul.

— WHY CLEO MATTERS: While Dems have a tear in their beer over the top race, down in Louisiana they’re doubling their numbers on the Hill with a second Democratic member, former (and future) Congressman Cleo Fields. Additionally, Louisiana also gets to double its membership in the Congressional Black Caucus, where New Orleans Congressman Troy Carter is already in the leadership.

— THE MOST: Out of the entire delegation, no one received more votes than Speaker Mike Johnson. He received 262,791 votes. Majority Leader Steve Scalise was right behind him, with 238,803 votes. Johnson likewise had the largest vote share, winning with 86 percent.

— THE LAY OF THE LANDVia Punchbowl: “[Speaker Mike] Johnson has spent his last 378 days as speaker crisscrossing America, preaching the gospel of former President Donald Trump, raising cash and predicting that Republicans would sweep the House, Senate and White House on Election Day. Now, if Republicans hold the majority, Johnson’s position atop the House Republican Conference would be secure. Johnson has to win a floor vote for speaker. But if Republicans hang on – which may not be clear for days – Johnson, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and House Majority Whip Tom Emmer will remain atop the House GOP.”

— MORE ON THE BIG GAVELVia Axios: “House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is feeling pretty good about his job security… As the election results rolled in Tuesday night, Johnson — who was once widely viewed as a placeholder leader — told Axios he’s confident House Republicans will keep their majority and tap him to stay on as speaker. Johnson predicted members would be receptive to his message —  ‘keep your quarterback’ — when it comes time for leadership elections, scheduled for Nov. 13.”
