Gov. Eric Holcomb wrapped up his weeklong travels to Brazil and Mexico by saying he expected new business investments to emerge from the trip.

Holcomb told reporters Thursday night from Mexico City that he had many productive meetings with government and business leaders promoting Indiana’s agriculture ventures.

“It really does remind me that face to face, sitting at the same table and hustling will pay dividends,” Holcomb said. “We’ve made more progress here — details yet to be shared — but I grow in confidence that they will materialize.”

Hints at more trips to come

The governor and first lady Janet Holcomb were joined by Indiana Economic Development Corp. officials and business and agriculture group leaders during the trip that began April 12 with a flight to Brazil.

The Indiana group moved on to Mexico City on Wednesday and the Holcombs were scheduled to return to the state on Friday.

“We need Indiana ag in the world. We need Mexico and Brazil ag to feed and fuel the world,” Holcomb said. “These [Indiana] companies that have operations abroad become stronger because of the work we’re doing together.”

When asked whether his discussions with business leaders have changed since his term as governor ends in January, Holcomb said he assures them of Indiana’s “trajectory.”

“They are heartened that I’m still on the road, pitching Indiana ag and bringing a band of brothers and sisters with me because that’s what is not just respected, that’s what’s expected in today’s small world,” he said. “This just reminded me, ‘Eric, get out on the road more,’ because Indiana has such a great story to tell and share.”

The week of travel marked Holcomb’s 22nd foreign economic development trip since he took office in 2017 and his first official visits to Brazil and Mexico, according to the governor’s office.

Governor’s lost voice has returned

Holcomb was initially scheduled to speak with Indiana reporters on Tuesday from Brazil about his trip.

That video conference, however, was called off less than a half hour before its scheduled start as the governor’s office said Holcomb had lost his voice from speaking during multiple meetings.

Holcomb said Thursday that he quickly recovered.

“It was one day of probably bliss for my wife,” he said. “But it [his voice] returned the next day and it was the day of travel.”
